Sportster head work now
offered by S&S
S&S Cycle is now offering CNC porting
on cylinder heads for XL models.
The CNC porting service being
offered on ’04 –’14 Sportster models
is described by the Wisconsin business
as being similar to the program it
provides for Big Twins. The customer
sends a set of heads to S&S, who then
give CNC ports to them for less than
the price of a comparable set of new
performance heads. Once machined,
the heads are assembled with new
premium valves, bronze guides, and
high-lift valve springs.
Customers also have the option of
buying a set of CNC ported 1200cc
heads outright.
Due to the design of the XL motor,
a set of CNC ported 883cc heads
cannot be used on a 883cc engine. The
motor must be upgraded to a 1,200cc
or 1,250cc engine with high
performance pistons with larger valve
reliefs. CNC ported 1,200cc heads are
compatible with stock 1,200cc
pistons, but work on 1,250cc engines
as well. S&S recommends the use of a
cam with TDC lifts no greater than
.213in intake, and .215in exhaust to
achieve .050in valve to valve
clearance.
The S&S CNC porting service is not
available for previously ported heads,
heads that have been structurally
damaged, or heads that are
determined to be unserviceable during
initial inspection.
CNC porting is not currently
available for Harley-Davidson CVO
engines or Screamin’ Eagle cylinder
heads.
