continued police, in fact i empathize with those officers who really are in our communities to serve and protect. A few bad officers have created a huge distrust between police officers and the communities that they serve. At the same time I don’t want people in our communities who are there to hurt and destroy those of us who are working, going to school, taking care of families, going to church and striving to be our best. Criminals should not be allowed to create a fearful enviornment for the rest of us. We have got to find a balance. We have got to follow the written laws the way in which they were intended. This country was founded on the concept of freedom for all, well none of us are free if we’re brutalized by our law enforcement officers, however we’ve got to go back to the realization that our society must have rules and we must be allowed to teach our children that there are rules in life. When you don’t obey the rules there will be consequences. The consequences in these cases are way out of line- death for jay walking, selling individual cigarettes or reaching for a wallet after being asked to do so by a law enforcement officer. Shane Martell We know all too little about the factors that affect the attitudes of the people of the world towards one another. It is clear, however, that color and race are at the top of our concerns. It can be noted that a person could lose everything they own in the world except one - freedom they own it and that is one’s attitude. When faced with race issues one would need to reflect on their personal beliefs and not that of the world. I find, being an educator, that we are faced with a perceived set of rules to follow when dealing with people. The bottom line brings us back to a person’s personal attitude and not that if the world. Marilyn Norris d 17
