Washington, D. C.
A monumental capital which goes all out to impress
The American capital puts on quite a display for visitors, and nowhere is this more apparent than the National Mall. Regarded as the country’ s national stage, this is where celebrations take place and where people gather to have their voices heard. With the stately US Capitol Building at one end and the dignified Lincoln Memorial at the other plus the Washington Monument majestically looming skywards, this swathe of land has an impressive collection of monuments and memorials honouring American forefathers and heroes. And, as 2026 marks America’ s 250th birthday, there’ s no better place to celebrate than the nation’ s capital.
East of the Washington Monument lies the world-renowned Smithsonian Institution, consisting of 17 museum and galleries- all of which are free to enter! Options include the National Museum of Natural History, the National Air & Space Museum, the National Portrait Gallery, plus the National Museum of African American History and Culture.
Other notable city landmarks include the Library of Congress, the world’ s largest library with free pre-bookable tours available, the Jefferson Memorial and the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum. For a window into America’ s most famous house, head to the White House Visitor Centre, which has interactive exhibits and numerous artefacts. Tours of the White House itself are possible, but must be arranged well in advance via the British Embassy in Washington, D. C.
Historic tree-lined Georgetown charms tourists and locals alike, with an array of top shops, trendy restaurants, fine art galleries and luxurious hotels. In cosmopolitan Dupont Circle you’ ll stumble upon dozens of bistros, bars, boutiques and unique shops, while Foggy Bottom is another restaurant-rich zone and home to the John F Kennedy Centre for the Performing Arts. Other notable neighbourhoods include funky Adams Morgan for its nightlife scene, and genteel Woodley Park for sidewalk cafés and the modern buzz of good restaurants.
Just across the Potomac River is Arlington National Cemetery, the final resting place for 400,000 active service personnel along with President John F Kennedy. In the quaint riverside town of Alexandria is beautiful Mount Vernon, the former home of George Washington and in Arlington County at the Pentagon is the National 9 / 11 Pentagon Memorial.
