HOW TO GET THE BEST DEAL ON COPIERS/MFPS
L
easing equipment is never
a “fun” experience, but it
shouldn’t be a miserable
one either. Leases are
often used to finance
large purchases, but they are not
supposed to be a way to hide
costs from buyers. The process,
unfortunately, is confusing enough
that many companies wind up
paying a whole lot more money
than they need for their copiers,
often due to extraneous features,
extended lease times, or minimum
page counts that are too high.
The flip side is that there are some
things that you can be on the
lookout for when you are looking
into a copier lease:
1. ALWAYS ASK FOR THE
PURCHASE PRICE OF THE COPIER
OR MULTIFUNCTION PRINTER
(MFP)
When shown a monthly payment, it
is often easy to overlook the actual
cost of the copier itself. This could
lead to an overpayment. Always
ask what the price would be to
purchase the copier and then ask
what the cost of the lease is going
to be.
these as a separate charge since
the maintenance has to be billed
monthly anyway. This way, if your
vendor fails to provide quality
service, you can get out of the
maintenance agreement even if you
have no way to cancel the lease.
Ultimately, whatever you choose
to do, whether buy or lease, is
going to come down to a cost-
benefit analysis. If you don’t have
the funds on hand to outright
purchase the equipment that you
need, then leasing is a very viable
option for you and your business.
You must ensure, however, that
you understand and think about
the terms and conditions that are
involved in the lease beforehand.

2. ASK FOR THE RECOMMENDED
AVERAGE MONTHLY VOLUME
Again, without knowing the true
cost of the machine due to a
monthly payment figure, you can
easily be oversold. You need to
know what kind of volume your
current copier is utilizing to know
what you will need out of your new
one.
3. SEPARATE THE MAINTENANCE
COSTS FROM THE LEASE
Finance charges can be extremely
common. Request that maintenance
costs for the copier not be included
in the lease. It is better to keep
