Ii worked at Equity Bank Ltd for 1 year 3 months and then joined Deloitte Consulting in 2006 as a Business Analyst in their Human Capital Advisory Division. I believe the MBA (Human Resource Management) I was pursuing at USIU-Africa while working played a key role in landing me that position. I spent 7 years in Deloitte and left as a Senior Consultant. In 2013, I joined one of my clients, Britam Group as the Group HR Manager.

Did you have a passion for what you are doing now back then when you were a student?

My passion has always been in problem solving, coming up with solutions to issues and developing new things. My current role provides me with this, which

Alumnus Jay Michoma (IBA ‘03 & MBA ‘07) is currently the Group HR Manager at Britam Group. In this role, he contributes towards implementation and management of human resources strategic and operational projects, initiatives and activities in Kenya as well as Britam Regional Offices in Uganda, South Sudan, Rwanda, Tanzania, Malawi and Mozambique.

Tell us about your journey to getting to your current role

After graduating with an IBA degree in June 2003, I went into the job market, like all my fellow school mates, with the confidence that I would get a good job. I was in for a surprise as I stayed without a job for more than 1 year. I decided to go back to USIU-Africa in 2004 and enrolled for MBA in Human Resource Management. As luck would have it, I got my first job at Equity Bank in 2005 as a Bank Teller.

is satisfying. When studying IBA, I believed my career was going to be in Financial Analysis. However, the job market at that time equated finance to accounting. I thus found myself being told that I should become an Accountant, which I had no passion for.

What are some of the challenges that you have encountered?

My role involves dealing with people. People are different with diverse needs and wants. One of the greatest challenges I encounter in my role is trying to balance all the different viewpoints, needs and wants in trying to deliver a good HR business partner for staff and for Britam in all the different countries we operate. Another challenge has been resistance to change. Change management of people in tandem to the speed at which our
