AVGA’s Second Major of 2017
New Senior Champs Crowned
Two new major champions were crowned following the AVGA Senior Club Championship
held Saturday and Sunday, May 20 and 21.
Contested in three divisions, Seniors, ages 50-59, Super Seniors, ages 60-69 and
Legends, age 70+, to be eligible for the titles, Senior Club Champion and Senior Club Net
Champion, players had to play in the Seniors and Super seniors flights for 36 holes from
the blue tees. Those who are over 70 and competing in the Legends flight played 18 holes
from the white tees.
After day one, the standings looked like this. The Legends competition was complete with
Rich Linn winning with a score of net 67. The gross competition for Senior Club
Champion had Scott Parker in the lead at even par followed by Ron Chester at +3 and
Jack Thomas at +5. On the net side, Dan Deshano started out with a blistering net 65 (-7),
with Les Fields and Keith deBrucky one shot back at -6 and Doug Hicks and King Wong at
-5.
The final day saw the first day leaders fade and the winners come from behind to claim
their titles. Jack Thomas shot a gross three under par 69 to finish at 146 four shots clear
of runner-up Scott Parker to win the Senior Club Championship. The Senior Net
Championship was tighter. Again, the first day leaders faded and Dave Williams caught
Doug Hicks at 139 (-5 net). The Net Championship was set to go to a playoff, but Hicks
ceded the Championship to Williams.
