Exhibits trace regions history
tarting with a single arrowhead in 1921, the Museum of the Big Bend has been telling
the story of the rich history of the Big Bend country for almost a century.
Built during the Great Depression, the Museum of the Big Bend is one of the few Texas
Centennial Memorial Museums still operating as a museum. Designed by Sul Ross State
University “Human Dynamo” Victor J. Smith, it is the only native stone building capped with
a lamella arch roof on campus. A truly unique and stunning building!
The Museum of the Big Bend tells the story of the Big and Davis Mountains region
through permanent and temporary exhibits, special presentations, adult workshops and
children’s programs.
In 2018, a capital campaign was launched to expand the historic building with a Museum
Complex that features an event center, mountainside patio, Tom Lea gallery dedicated to his
historic beef cattle paintings and more.
The Museum of the Big Bend, located on the campus of Sul Ross State University, is
accessed at Entrance 4. Hours of operation are Tuesday-Saturday, 9am-5pm and Sunday, 1-
5pm. Closed on Monday and major holidays.
