State Designation Fuels Alma’ s Downtown Transformation

Alma, Arkansas, known for its friendly community and rich history, received a boost in its downtown revitalization efforts when it was accredited by Main Street Arkansas in July 2023. The program, run by the Arkansas Heritage Department, offers technical support in historic restoration, economic development, and community promotion. Alma is now one of just 21 communities in the state to receive this designation.
The journey began about a decade ago with a vision to beautify Alma’ s downtown. A group of dedicated residents initiated a streetscape project that eventually transformed Fayetteville Avenue into a vibrant corridor lined with flowers, trees, and black-eyed Susans.“ The streetscape, in my opinion, catapulted this thing,” said volunteer Malinda McSpadden, a member of the nonprofit coalition Hometown Alma, which aims to bring culture and activity back to the area.
The project’ s planning started in 2014, led by former mayors Keith Green and Jerry Martin. In 2019, Steve Beam
Construction was awarded a $ 2.8 million contract, and by 2020, the transformation was complete.
Bryan Huff, president of the Alma Area Chamber of Commerce, said joining Main Street Arkansas could help attract new investors to downtown.“ We are hoping these efforts will help incentivize investors,” he noted. McSpadden added that the Main Street network provides valuable guidance from other communities working on similar goals.

Brian Kirkendoll praised the improvements:“ There are things the community has to be proud of … now we have a downtown area that looks like we care.”
City planning director Cody Schindler emphasized the importance of public investment, noting future plans for areas near the depot and the new Olive Coffee house. Across the tracks, the old farmer’ s market shed has been converted into The Potting Shed, a boutique gift and decor shop.
Alma Mayor Jim Fincher said the results so far“ look absolutely beautiful” and that attention will now turn to improving storefronts, with two already sold and a third being considered.
Greg Phillips, director of Main Street Arkansas, said,“ We are inspired by communities like Alma and excited to help highlight what makes them special.”
