Dear Amy,

Why is junk food so bad for you? If junk food is so bad, does it mean I should never eat ice cream again, I can’t have chips or cookies anymore? I can’t drink my favorite soda anymore? I feel tired every time I eat stuff like Mcdonalds and fast foods, why is that? I never get enough energy to go to the gym anymore. I feel like I get tired really easily, especially after I run 1 lap around the baseball field during practice. Why is that?

-Tommy 16, San Francisco ,CA

Dear Tommy,

Eating too much junk food like Mcdonalds, burgers, french fries anything high in sugars make your energy levels decrease. Foods that are high in sugars and fats make your metabolism work extra hard in order to burn off the calories, making you feel tired. After you eat these foods as your breakfast, lunch or dinner, you feel tired right, and you just want to go home and take a little nap? Yes, that is exactly what is suppose to happen after you eat junk food. Your pancreas secretes large amounts of insulin a product that helps prevent your body from having a blood sugar spike. Then, the junk foods don’t provide the necessary amounts of protein and carbohydrates for your body that your blood sugar level drops, leaving you to feel tired and groggy, where you don’t have enough energy to play a full game of baseball or work out for 2 hours and all you want to do is sleep. My recommendation for you is that, you should try eating something like a salad or pasta instead of foods with high sugar contents, this way you will be able to increase your energy levels.

Dear Amy,

If I exercise constantly, why is eating junk food not good for me, I would burn off all the calories right? Shouldn’t eating junk food be okay then, if I can burn off all the fat and calories I gained?

-Tiffany, 17 Boston, MA

Dear Tiffany,

Junk food is never the answer. If you are working out each day with a constant work out schedule still try to stay away from these foods with high carbs and filled with saturated fats. Although you burn off the calories at a faster rate by exercising, that are digested from foods such as donuts or candy produce sugars in the body, which prompts the liver to produce large amounts of insulin which can cause diabetes. By eating these foods high in sugar content could lead to your body losing the “I am full signal” where you would never know when you are entirely full and you will constantly eat. Eating junk foods not only increase the risk of obesity, but if you are exercising daily to burn off the calories eaten, by eating junk food it decreases your energy levels making you have less energy to perform your daily tasks. You would have less energy to exercise, my recommendation would be to stay away from too much junk food, once in a while as a treat would be okay. Try going for something more healthy like fruits and vegetables instead of potato chips and ice cream.
