Community Solutions
THROUGH SHARED HOUSING
A
n easy-going couple, Patrick &
Karla's lifestyle means they’ve added friends as well as housemates
during the 30+ years they’ve shared their
home. With the economic downturn they
are searching for a housemate to help
them meet the financial gap. Bonus:
Having new friends to share their home.

Looking out over his graying congregation in Beaverton a pastor contemplates
resources and money. His congregation
is aging. Folk’s fixed income won't match
rising inflation. He knows increased taxes and the cost of maintaining a home
stretches a dwindling congregation’s resources. During sleepless nights the pastor mulls ways to give his flock the needed answers.
Local city leaders are rethinking zoning
and a larger plan to stabilize the income
gap for local residents. Bedroom suburbs,
though close to the city core are home to
ample homes occupied by aging tax payers. Residents may be house rich but feel
income strapped. Community Director
Ann Adrian (http://www.linkedin.com/
pub/dir/Ann/Adrian) decided to head
the issue off at the pass during Celebrating Older Americans Month. An invite
went out to Lake Oswego’s Community Center (http://bit.ly/1mtrdqf) where
residents considered fresh ideas offered
by Let’s Share Housing. Adrian has been
proactively advocating for solutions: “Our
May 20, 9 am program on shared housing
is full with a waiting list. We have 14 registrants and 5 waiting so we are seeing if
we can move the presentation to a larger
room. The information is so important
and I am thrilled people are interested.”
Executive Director Anne Chana Andler (http://linkd.in/1gpEhxd) of the
non-profit Villages NW (http://villagesnw.org/) business is helping communities support one another. As a “village
midwife” she focuses on mentoring villages in formation and early development. Andler knows shared housing fits
hand in glove with the model for Villages
throughout the country. It provides solutions to real-life problems
City Planners are standing up and taking
note. Ann Wyatt’s article in Planning
magazine (http://bit.ly/1gSIcR0) highlights shared housing as one solution for
stabilizing communities. Counties are onboard with the idea too: Clark County’s
Commission on Aging chair Gary Beagle thinks sharing makes sense on many
levels (http://youtu.be/BPwuQN2XNuQ)
Colete Anderson (http://linkd.in/1lro8TD)Project Manager for Clark County’s Planning Department agrees:” Clark
County, Wash., like everywhere in the
country, is anticipating a huge surge in
the number of residents 60 or better. Today, one in six residents is 60 or older, and
the number will increase to one in four
by 2030. We need to find solid answers to
serve the needs of our community. Let's
Share Housing brings ideas & the skills
to residents so they can make informed
decisions."
Communities are tilling the idea of shared
housing. From folks like Patrick & Karla,
the pastor, Villages NW, Lake Oswego
& Clark County, the idea is taking root
regionally. It's a solution drawing the attention of the national press: PBS (http://
to.pbs.org/1l7W8uh) NBC, (http://bit.
ly/1hrMf6v) CSM (http://bit.ly/1hrMf6v)
& even French television have noted this
growing trend in the U.S. Realtors® considering a niche may want to consider the
model "My House Our House" (http://
www.myhouseourhouse.com/) author’s
advocate.
Our communities & organizations are
seeking concrete solutions. Why not send
a representative to one or several of the
upcoming presentations offered by Let's
Share Housing? (https://letssharehousing.com/events/) Whether you are House
rich, realtor, property manager, broker,
pastor, fraternal or a neighborhood association, we've got answers for you.
