o Headline: This is a routine for capturing essence. After reading a story encourage your
child to draw a title that best describes how she/he perceives the meaning. Don’t forget
that each reader’s respond to a text is unique. Allow them to share their unique meaning
in their drawings.
o What is Missing: A routine to promote careful observations and spark imaginations.
After a story or a play encourage your child to express ideas on what is missing from the
story or the play. What might else the characters could do? How can you extend this
story? How can you put your own ideas?
o Step Inside: This routine asks children to step inside the role of a character or object.
Use dramatic play activities at home and engage your child in fun exploration of
feelings. Encourage your child to pretend that he/she is a character from a story or an
object and act out that role.

o Story Routine: A routine for finding central ideas and hidden messages. Read a story
with your child and use the thinking routine to uncover complexity. What is the main idea
of this story? What are the hidden messages? You can also show a picture to your child
and encourage him/her to create their own story using the thinking routine.
