“ Scarlet Tanager — Frick Park , National Migratory Bird Day ”
Malcolm K ( 8th Grade )
I was walking through the woods at Frick Park when a birder exclaimed “ There ’ s a Scarlet Tanager up in that cherry tree !” I caught a glimpse of its glowing red body as it flew onto a twig about fifty feet up and in the open . As I got my camera ready to take some pictures , I had lost track of its movements in the trees . I was excited about seeing the bird yet annoyed that I had not managed to get a shot . All of a sudden , my dad had located the bird again , perched on the branch of a neighboring tree ! I grabbed my camera and zoomed in on the bird as quickly as I could and got a few quick pictures . This is the first time I have photographed , let alone seen , a Scarlet Tanager ! Although many of these birds migrate to Pennsylvania in the summer , they are still very elusive and an exciting bird to find . My grandparents used to live in Pittsburgh , and now live in Florida , both places where the Scarlet Tanager can be found , but they have never seen one , which is another reason why I feel this shot is so special . Although the picture is a little blurry and the lighting is not great , I still cherish the moment that I was able to capture .
