This admonition was given by the
Senior Special Assistant to Governor
Babatunde Fashola (SAN) on Islamic
Religion, Alhaji Imam AbdulHakeem Kosoko, at the maiden
public lecture organized by the
League of Resident Imams , in
collaboration with the Executive
Committee of the Lagos State
Secretariat Mosque, Alausa, Ikeja, to
commemorate the Hijra 1435 A.H
Maolud Nabiyyi, the birthday of the
Holy Prophet Mohammad.
Imam Kosoko who described the
Holy Prophet as the best ever created
by Allah, stressed that the Prophet
during his lifetime never allowed his
followers to trample on the rights of
non-believers, maim or kill fellow
human beings in the name of religion
but encouraged and preached good
neighborliness, orderliness, mutual
understanding and peaceful coexistence amongst the people.
On the issue of celebrating the
Maolud Nabiyyi which some schools
of thought are against based on their
ideological belief, the Governor's
aide reasoned that there is no sin in
celebrating the Prophet's birthday
th
which is usually held on the 12 of the
lunar month of Robiul-Awwal,
except if celebrated in an immodest
manner and extended beyond the
main day.
While frowning at the habit of some
people who in the guise of celebrating
the birthday, raise money from
unsuspecting followers, Imam
Kosoko encouraged Muslims to
cultivate the habit of fasting every
Monday as a mark of honour and in
consistent with the usual practice of
the Prophet who fasted every
Monday being his birthday to thank
Allah.
Personalities in attendance include;
retired Hon. Justice Ibrahim
Olorunnimbe who chaired the
occasion, Solicitor-General &
Permanent Secretary, Ministry of
Justice and Chairman, Lagos State
Secretariat Mosque Committee, Mr.
Lawal Pedro (SAN) and Dr. Tajudeen
Afolabi, First Vice-Chairman of the
Mosque.
