The India Silk Dressing Table
A flame mahogany veneered ‘Carlton House’ dressing table, applied with fine brass swag handles,
the horseshoe superstructure centred by an oval swing mirror, above drawers and two bowed
cabinet doors, the desk with an inset leather writing surface above three frieze drawers, the central
drawer fitted with compartments, on square tapering line strung legs terminating in brass feet.
Inspired by a Regency original. The eponymous ‘Carlton House’ was famously the home of the
Prince Regent from 1783. When being remodelled by the architect Henry Holland, the future George
IV commissioned a desk of this design for the house.
