Tirthankara also called Jina (“Victor”), in Jainism, is a saviour
who has succeeded in crossing over life’s stream of rebirths and
has made a path for others to follow.
The ‘Tirthankaras’ (fully enlightened beings) are worshipped as the
supreme beings in this world because they acquire infinite
knowledge, perception, purity of conduct and power by
destroying the four vitiating ‘karmas’ at spiritual level. This gives
rise to unique attributes in them, spiritual and physical.
All Tirthankaras are born as human beings but they have attained a
state of enlightenment through self realization.
Tirthankaras are also known as Arihants or Jinas.
