The Four Questions
The “ Four Questions ,” traditionally asked by the youngest person at the table , reflect the educational function of the Passover Seder and ensure that the children inquire about and then discover the meaning of the holiday .
? מַ ה נִשְ תַ נָּה הַ לַ יְלָּ ה הַ זֶה , מִ כָּל הַ לֵ ילוֹת
Mah nishtanah ha-lailah ha-zeh mi-kol ha-laylot ? Why is this night different from all other nights ?

. שֶ בְכָּל הַ לֵילוֹת , אָנוּ אוֹכְלִ ים חָּ מֵ ץ וּמַ צָּה ; וְהַ לַ יְלָּ ה הַ זֶה , כֻּלוֹ מַ צָּה
Sh ’ bechol ha ’ leilot , anu ochlim chametz u ’ matzah ; v ’ halyla ha ’ zeh koo ’ lo matzah .
On all other nights we eat either leavened bread or matzah ; why on this night only matzah ?
. שֶ בְכָּל הַ לֵ ילוֹת , אָנוּ אוֹכְלִים שְ אָר יְרָּ קוֹת ; וְהַ לַ יְלָּ ה הַ זֶה , מַ רוֹר
She ’ bechol ha ’ leilot , anu ochlim she ’ ar yerakot , v ’ halyla ha ’ zeh maror . On all other nights we eat all kinds of herbs ; why on this night do we especially eat bitter herbs ?
שֶ בְכָּל הַ לֵילוֹת , אֵ ין אָנוּ מַ טְ בִילִ ין אַפִלוּ פַ עַ ם אַחַ ת ; וְהַ לַ יְלָּ ה . הַ זֶה , שְ תֵ י פְעָּמִ ים
Sh ’ bechol ha ’ leilot , ain anu matbilin afilu pa ’ am achat , v ’ halyla ha ’ zeh she ’ tei pe ’ amim .
On all other nights we do not dip herbs at all ; why on this night do we dip them twice ?
, שֶ בְכָּל הַ לֵילוֹת , אָנוּ אוֹכְלִין בֵין יוֹשְ בִין וּבֵין מְ סֻּ בִין ; וְהַ לַ יְלָּ ה הַ זֶה . כֻּלָּ נוּ מְ סֻּ בִין
She ’ bechol ha ’ leilot , anu ochlin bein yoshveen u ’ vein mesubin , v ’ halyla ha ’ zeh kulanu mesubin .
On all other nights we eat sitting up or reclining ; why on this night do we all recline ?
