Employees at the call center must already have or be able to quickly develop their skills, Davis said.
“ You need phone and computer skills for the job,” Davis said.“ You have to enter data. You work under some pressure. You have to have a good work ethic and be at the job on time.”
Other careers, like pipeline maintenance, take workers out into the field, Davis said. Pipelines are regulated by the government. The company has to obey the rules.
“ You don’ t wing it,” Davis said.“ You have to follow their procedures.” iPad, send it in, and ask what is needed to fix the problem, Davis said.
The company offers competitive pay and benefits better than most, Davis said. Those benefits include health and dental insurance, a 401( k) plan, and incentive bonuses based on performance.
To have a successful career, pipeline maintenance and other field workers need math, science and computer skills, along with a strong mechanical aptitude. Call center employees must be able to communicate, Davis said.

Long-time field employees know all about those regulations, but retirements are eroding that knowledge away.
“ We are losing a lot of institutional knowledge,” Davis said.“ That knowledge is difficult to embed in a new person.”
The use of technology helps make up for that loss, Davis said. The technology includes employees in the field using iPads for communication.
