Issue 2 Explore It is not necessary that both parents agree on everything but there should be a room for healthy discussions and acceptance - effort should be made in understanding and then respecting individual ‘non- negotiable’ values by not encouraging the child to go against those. Once established, parents should role model the values, habits and attitudes they wish to see in their children. 2. Teachable Moments Ordinary moments during the day provide for demonstrating or reinforcing important lessons. These ordinary moments, if spotted and used to connect with the child can transform into AMJ 2017 Teachable Moments that can impart a lesson that will be with the child forever. Power of Teachable Moment magnifies when a parent demonstrates or explains his/her rationale behind what he/she did. Involving the child when you make a list and shop accordingly is one such moment that can help you teach - thinking in advance about needs and wants and budgeting. The picture below illustrates more such teachable moments. 3. Pocket Money Pocket Money, as referred here, is like a child’s simplistic paycheck. Depending upon child’s age, time parents can spend and child’s preparation so far - level of understanding on money matters, this training can be used to talk about range of topics from simpler - spending, saving, making choices to borrowing, goal setting, banks, investing and planning among others.
