It is not necessary that both parents agree
on everything but there should be a room
for healthy discussions and acceptance -
effort should be made in understanding
and then respecting individual ‘non-
negotiable’ values by not encouraging
the child to go against those. Once
established, parents should role model
the values, habits and attitudes they wish
to see in their children.
2. Teachable Moments
Ordinary moments during the day
provide for demonstrating or reinforcing
important lessons. These ordinary
moments, if spotted and used to connect
with the child can transform into
AMJ 2017
Teachable Moments that can impart a
lesson that will be with the child forever.
Power of Teachable Moment magnifies
when a parent demonstrates or explains
his/her rationale behind what he/she did.
Involving the child when you make a list
and shop accordingly is one such
moment that can help you teach -
thinking in advance about needs and
wants and budgeting. The picture below
illustrates more such teachable moments.
3. Pocket Money
Pocket Money, as referred here, is like a
child’s simplistic paycheck. Depending
upon child’s age, time parents can spend
and child’s preparation so far - level of
understanding on money matters, this
training can be used to talk about range
of topics from simpler - spending, saving,
making choices to borrowing, goal
setting, banks, investing and planning
among others. The picture on the next
page illustrates the ages and stages at
which what concepts may be introduced.
