When the media reports on these crimes, they often misgender, profile, and dehumanize the victim. A few examples of this would be when local news agencies reported on the deaths of Monica Loera, India Clarke, and Mercedes Williamson, and the incarceration of Meagan Taylor.

Clarke's article referred to by her birth name and by male pronouns while mentioning an arrest for prostitution despite no conviction. The same happened to Monica Loera and Mercedes Williamson.

Both Monica and Mercedes were referred to by male pronouns and by their birth name throughout the articles. Even the picture they used for Monica was masculine, which did not represent who she was.

Lastly, Megan Taylor’s genitalia was brought to light for no reason by the writer stating that she was in the medical ward because she has “boobs and a penis” instead of stating she hadn't fully transitioned as well as being referred to her by numbers instead of her name.

However, the numbers are very difficult to find due to a few factors. Victims scared of being outed to their family and/or employer will keep from reporting attacks and when they are reported, they are not classified as hate crimes. To make matters worse, only 17 states (and D.C) have a hate crime law that covers both sexual orientation and gender identity.

A total of seven trans women of color have already been murdered within two months of the new year. Something needs to give and the violence needs to stop. To so many people being transgender is something that is just not possible but they're obviously wrong. We're here and we're queer. Let us pee in peace.
