nfortunately, many immigrants do not learn English the way I was able to. Not knowing the language can impact the adults, because it’s harder for them to learn another language, and they are limited in their jobs selection. They can only work on places where they don’t have to speak English that much, like really physical labor. Even paying bill or going to the doctor can be a challenge without a translator. For instance, my mother, who doesn’t speak English well, needs to see a doctor frequently for a reoccurring hand issue. She often has to rely on luck for a translator because if she sees the doctor without one, she doesn’t know what she’s supposed to do. Even solving problems at home like calling the plumber or even reading the mail she gets from the bank can be difficult. She is at the mercy of her children to try to understand this adult issues. Not knowing English in the United States puts people in a state of disenfranchisement.

Learn, like my mom goes to classes a couple of nights a week to learn.The only way to make an immigrants life easier and to get the power they deserve, learning English is a must. It might not seem fair but America won’t change unless we help.
For those who speak English, please be patient with those who don’t. They are trying their best. Before you judge try to imagen what it would be like to be in their shoes. Not everyone was lucky enough to speak English as their first language
