The strategy also includes a monitoring tool and an industry-wide survey to track adoption of leading practices and specific pillar areas. These tools will help spotlight priority areas and enable selfevaluation across operations.
From mobilisation to momentum The year 2025 has been a year of mobilisation. The strategy has been rolled out across Minerals Council platforms, Tripartite forums( Government, Unions, Employers), IMS( International Mining Safety) Hub and through various partner associations. The first wave of VFLs has set a new standard for leadership engagement. The FoG Action Plan and T & M initiatives are gaining traction. And the industry is preparing for a Q4 survey to assess progress and recalibrate priorities. The journey ahead is clear: deepen implementation, expand participation and accelerate learning. The goal is not just compliance, but transformation.
A call to collective commitment As we look to the future, one truth remains: every fatality is one too many. Khumbul ' ekhaya 2.0 is not just a strategy. It is a movement. A commitment. A shared responsibility. It calls on every leader to show up. Every worker to speak up. Every company to step up. Let us remember home. And let us ensure that every worker returns there safely. •
FoG, T & M, and general incidents still dominate the
fatality landscape.
January and October 2025, the industry recorded an 11 % reduction in injuries compared to the same period in 2024. Fatalities have declined from 55 in 2023 to 42 in 2024, continuing a long-term downward trend. These results are due to the tremendous safety and health efforts, including focused interventions, instituted by mining operations across the industry and the strategy was developed to address specific gap areas to accelerate learning from successes and progress towards zero harm. However, challenges remain: FoG, T & M, and general incidents still dominate the fatality landscape. To address these, the industry has committed to:
• Strengthening supervision, fatigue controls and ground support integrity.
• Enhancing the quality of incident investigations and learning reviews.
