WELCOME MESSAGES
COUNCILLOR KABELO GWAMANDA ,
Executive Mayor of the City of Johannesburg
We are thrilled to extend a warm and enthusiastic welcome to all athletes for the much-anticipated Soweto Marathon , popularly known as the “ People ’ s Race ” that will be taking place on Sunday , 5 November 2023 .
This event isn ’ t just a race ; it ’ s a celebration of community , determination , and the vibrant spirit of Soweto . Whether you ’ re a seasoned runner , a first-time participant , or cheering on your friends and family , you are an integral part of what makes this marathon truly special .
The most famous township in South Africa , Soweto , grinds to a total halt on this day , allowing athletes to rule the streets .
During this demanding sporting event , runners will have the privilege of traversing through some of Soweto ’ s most iconic and historically significant locations . These sites have been thoughtfully chosen to not only challenge and motivate the runners but also to provide a profound connection to Soweto ’ s rich heritage . The route will take runners past notable landmarks , including the Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital , the third-largest hospital in South Africa , Regina Mundi Catholic Church , which is one of the prominent churches that played a pivotal role during the liberation struggle and fight against apartheid , Vilakazi Street , the only street in the world where two Noble Peace prize winners former president Nelson Mandela and Archbishop Desmond Tutu resided , the Hector Pieterson Memorial and Orlando Stadium as well as the late Mama Winnie Madikizela-Mandela ’ s home , among others .
Hosting prestigious events like the Soweto Marathon confirms the City ’ s status as a top sports destination . We salute the sponsors and organisers who make sure every year that all obstacles are removed to showcase the beauty of the City and its residents to the world .
I want to reassure the people of Johannesburg and the race organisers that city officials will remain highly vigilant throughout the historic event .
The 42.2km , 21km , and 10km routes will be lined up by numerous members from the City of Johannesburg ’ s Emergency Management Service , the Joburg Roads Agency , and the Joburg Metro Police Department to ensure everything goes as planned .
So , from the very heart of Soweto , we welcome you with open arms , warm smiles , and the beating rhythm of our vibrant culture . Let the race begin and may each step you take be a testament to your resilience and an inspiration to all . Together , we run Soweto , together , we conquer the road , and together , we celebrate !
