Namibia Great travel adventure | Prolific wildlife | Cultural diversity | Stunning landscapes

From the world’ s oldest desert and wildlife in Etosha National Park to the moon-like dunes of Sossusvlei and shipwrecks of the Skeleton Coast, Namibia has many must-sees. Dominated by its huge salt pan, Etosha National Park is an elite wildlife-watching destination, with over 100 mammal species such as big cats, elephant, zebra, giraffe and black rhino. For unadulterated scenic beauty Damaraland is hard to beat. It’ s a hotspot for ancient rock art, geological oddities, indigenous Himba communities and desert-adapted wildlife.

SOUTH AFRICA
The eerie Skeleton Coast, where the Namib Desert meets the Atlantic Ocean, has long been a graveyard for unwary ships caught in the thick fog and treacherous currents. Namibia’ s adventure hub is Swakopmund, a rather surreal former colonial town famed for its German-themed culture and architecture as well as adrenalin-sports, such as skydiving and sand-boarding. Nearby Walvis Bay is famous for its busy harbour and abundant birdlife, especially flamingos in its vast natural lagoon.
Getting there: Flights from the UK to Windhoek take about 15 hours with one stop. Namibia easily combines with South African destinations with flights of about 2 hours from Johannesburg to Windhoek.
The Namib-Naukluft Park is one of the world’ s largest conservation areas. Its wide open spaces are framed by purple-blue mountains and impossible sunsets making it a place of singular beauty and peace. Sossusvlei is another epic landscape, known for soaring rust-orange dunes, the bleached white pan( Deadvlei) and skeletal trees. Check out also spectacular Fish River Canyon; quaint Lüderitz, and Windhoek, the country’ s capital which has a distinctly European feel.

Climbing Big Daddy: Savour Namibia’ s most iconic sights from the peak of one of its highest dunes. We recommend taking an early morning climb for the most exhilarating view.
Visiting the Salt Pans: Etosha may be home to 144 mammal species but the vast white Salt Pan is the star of the show. We recommend visiting at dawn or dusk for the full dazzling experience.
Checking out geological wonders: Damaraland is a must-visit for dramatic, ancient landscapes and unique geological features. Our favourites include the UNESCO protected rock engravings at Twyfelfontein and Burnt Mountain’ s striking vertical basalt“ Organ Pipes”.
