As a new decade approaches AfMA will
continue to provide formal and informal
learning opportunities through our Professional
Development Forums, Annual Fleet Awards,
Annual Conference and Exhibition and
through Swinburne Universities Diploma
of Leadership and Management. AfMA will
soon introduce a new membership category
for accredited individual suppliers who are
required to complete online training in Chain
or Responsibility, Work Health & Safety – The
Mobile Workplace and Risk & Hazard – The
Mobile Workplace. These will be available to
both members and non-members for a small
fee and next year will launch a number of
taskforces to consider industry issues and
progress your industry. Given me a call if you’re

In this edition of FleetDrive we focus in on
Australia’s National Safe Work month by
reconsidering the concept of Vehicles as a
Workplace. We look at the future of mobility
and restart the discussion about ridesharing
– which is safest, cheapest and most reliable
for fleets as a mobility alternative? Plus, our
regular Around the States column will keep
you updated with all things happening in your

In September I was delighted to attend the
American Fleet & Leasing Association’s (AFLA)
50th Anniversary Corporate Fleet Conference.
AfMA and AFLA are founding members of a
Global Fleet Networking Consortium along with
AMAV, CRTA and ACFO.

I delivered a presentation to AFLA’s board on
a global initiative and participated in a panel
discussion where I presented on vehicle safety,
comparing the differences in safety equipment
for a 2018 Toyota Camry across 13 counties
whilst showing the facility rate for 100,000
people. You would be surprised to know that
only 4 people out of 400 had a 5 star safety
policy and the focus was on total cost on
ownership without considering extra safety
equipment such as autonomous emergency
