MISSOURI URBAN
JOURNALISM WORKSHOP
Since 1971, the Missouri School of
Journalism in Columbia, Mo. and
Dow Jones News Fund have provided
an intensive, nine-day workshop to
immerse high school students from
all over the country in the world of
professional journalism. Participants
will produce print stories for the
Urban Pioneer, published online
by the Columbia Missourian. Some
students will also produce television
stories for KOMU, the local NBC
affiliate. Workshop participants are
funded by scholarship and selected
based on a competitive application
process.

Camp ASB
at Lee’s Summit West High School in
Lee’s Summit, Mo. from July 23-28, is
a hands-on workshop that teaches
students Broadcasting skills. There is
a strong focus on storytelling, camera
skills, writing and editing. Students
will produce a show by the end of the
week.

Workshop

During the workshop, high school
students will live in university housing
for a one-week stay; learn about news,
feature, and sports writing; learn to
write for the web, including blogging;
prepare photos, slide shows, and
videos for the web; attend editing
sessions with professional journalists;
and work together to publish a
workshop webzine.

Write on Sports Summer Camps
Currently sixth and seventh graders in
The Orange (for session one) , Clifton
and Hawthorne (for session four), and
Newark (for sessions two and three)
are invited to join in a fun, two-week
day camp. Students will interview
athletes, journalists and broadcasters
and attend at least one sports event.
They will write stories, blog and make
videos to report on their activities. The
camp is free and transportation and
lunch are provided.
The 2016 Princeton Summer
Journalism Program is an allexpenses-paid journalism and college
preparation program at Princeton
University for students from lowincome backgrounds. Students learn
reporting skills from celebrated
journalists, report and write their own
newspaper, and are paired with a
counselor who oversees their college
admissions process.

The 2016 High School Summer
Academy at The King’s College
Beginning July 31, spend
a week in New York taking liberal
arts coursework in journalism
at the Summer Academy of The
King’s College. Visit a New York City
newsroom and study with Paul Glader,
a WSJ journalist and professor.
