Students Paul
O’Mara and Miriam
Sachs conduct an
interview with the
family of Kim Phuc,
featured in the
famous “Napalm Girl”
photograph. The
interview helped
connect a famous
image to places and
people still living in
Vietnam, and created
a discussion about
the power of images
to change public
opinion.
CAN’T TRAVEL
TO CUBA?
My students are fortunate
enough to afford
international trips, but
everyone can create their
own living history projects
to push their staffs into
unfamiliar territory.
What neighborhood in
your town is “off limits?”
What immigrant or
religious group lives under
the radar of our dominant
culture?
Sometimes the other side
of the world is just on the
other side of the railroad
tracks. Or on the other side
of campus.
Mira Costa Students Paul O’Mara and Miriam Sachs
interview former Viet Cong officer, Captain Nguyen. Face to
face encounters like this help students appreciate alternative
perspectives and put a human face on the war.
Mira Costa High School students Dylan Lenze and Sam Schwartz revise
interview questions while traveling to the Mekong Delta. Students are
organized into teams and choose their own topics for the documentaries.
