icholas Ghibaudy wrote about the changed lives
of Venezuelans who had fled the government of
President Hugo Chavez. He tells the story artfully
through the Mendez family’s harrowing experience.
Fred Blevens, program director and professor at Florida International University, described his performance.
“Nico’s challenge was to tell the story of a couple’s
chilling and inspirational journey from powerful journalists to asylum and U.S. citizenship. He did it with deft
and passion; one of the best performances we’ve seen
in any workshop.”
In the essay about his plans, Nico wrote: “ The dream
that started as a child dazzled by the magic of sports
pages is about to enter a new phase, one that will help
me translate inspiration and aspiration into the skills I’ll
need to get ‘that guy’s job when I’m older.’ ”

anira Abubakar came to the U.S. from Nigeria as a
3-year-old. Writing helped her cross the language
gap. Her fifth-grade essay about her dream for
social justice planted her interest in journalism.
At the C-HIT workshop, she reviewed how the dearth
of sports at her high school contributes to students’
poor performance on the state’s physical fitness test.
Lynne De Lucia’s nomination said, “Zanira is diligent,
has a strong work ethic and as news editor of Co-Op
Voices had a knack at getting students to write a range
of topics. She wants to be a journalist and sees herself
working at a foreign news service.”
Zanira wrote, “My experiences in Nigeria and learning the power of writing have significantly impacted
my love for journalism by being a career in which I can
exercise both my delight in helping others and my passion for writing.”
