He tells the story artfully through the Mendez family’s harrowing experience.   Fred Blevens, program director and professor at Florida International University, described his performance.    “Nico’s challenge was to tell the story of a couple’s chilling and inspirational journey from powerful journalists to asylum and U.S. citizenship. Writing helped her cross the language gap. Her fifth-grade essay about her dream for social justice planted her interest in journalism.  At the C-HIT workshop, she reviewed how the dearth of sports at her high school contributes to students’ poor performance on the state’s physical fitness test.  Lynne De Lucia’s nomination said, “Zanira is diligent, has a strong work ethic and as news editor of Co-Op Voices had a knack at getting students to write a range of topics.
