arch 2013: Sometimes sports is the big news. At
Corona del Sol HS, rather than focus on just the “main
sport,” the staff decided to recognize all of the school’s
champions. The lead was the basketball team, which
won its second consecutive state championship.
However, effective photos also highlighted two state
champion wrestlers. The index to the “Championship
edition” easily guides readers to coverage of other
state champions.
The page is anchored by the obvious photo – a title
celebration. Its composition, however, is excellent.
The trophy in the foreground mirrors and frames the
excitement shown by the expression of the team
members. It is a nice tight shot that does not let the
emotion of the moment get lost in wasted space.
Did you notice? Nice crisp fonts for the headlines and
subtle use of spot color work well together.
Says the adviser: “Because I don’t like to jinx things,
we didn’t make the final decision about the special
section until the boys’ basketball team won the state
championship,” notes adviser Kris Urban. “That made
the turnaround less than a week. Truthfully, I had an
idea I wanted to do this if we won (and I did speak
to my editor in chief about it), but it wasn’t made
public to the staff until after the championship game.”
Challenges? Of course. “I think the biggest challenge
was to not make it look like we were favoring the
basketball team. We probably could have made a
four-page section about just the basketball team, but
I wanted to include all the athletic and academic state
champions of that year.”
