Aquatics

THE KATHIE AND STEVE MARKEL LEARN TO SWIM PROGRAM
Our levels classes are designed to help participants achieve maximum success, using the American Red Cross Learn-to-Swim course layout. The level progression helps develop their water safety, survival and swim skills. These are the same levels that are taught in our Camp Hilbert swim lesson program.
Level 1: Learn to Swim
For first time swimmers Instructor: Aquatics Staff Ages: 6 +
This class is for the first-time swimmer that doesn’ t know how to swim. Skills to be taught in this level include: entering and exiting the water, blowing bubbles, bobbing, opening eyes underwater and retrieving submerged objects, front and back gliding, back floating, rolling from front to back and back to front, treading water, alternating simultaneous arm and leg actions on front and back, combining arm and leg actions on front and back and age-appropriate water safety topics.

Level 2: Fundamental Aquatics Skills
For beginner swimmers Instructor: Aquatics Staff Ages: 6 +
This class is for the child who can swim independently and has not mastered his / her stroke techniques. Skills to be taught include: entering and exiting the water, submerging, bobbing, opening eyes underwater and retrieving submerged objects, front, jellyfish, and tuck floating, front kicking and gliding, back kicking and gliding, rolling from front to back and back to front, rotary breathing, treading water, combining arm and leg actions on front and back and age-appropriate water safety skills.

Level 3: Stroke Development
An advanced swimming class Instructor: Aquatics Staff Ages: 6 +
This class is for the more advanced swimmer. It builds on Level 2 skills through additional guided practice in deeper water. Skills to be taught include: entering the water, headfirst entries, bobbing while moving toward safety, rotary breathing, back and survival floating, changing from vertical to horizontal position on front and back, treading water, flutter and dolphin kicking on front, scissors and breaststroke kicking, front crawling, elementary backstroke and age-appropriate water safety.

Level 4: Stroke Improvement
A technique focused swimming class Instructor: Aquatics Staff Ages: 6 +
This class is for the more advanced swimmer. It builds on the skills in Level 3 through additional guided practice, and helps swimmers develop confidence and endurance. Skills to be taught include: headfirst entries from the side in compact and stride positions, swimming underwater, feet-first surface diving, survival swimming, open turning on front and back, treading water using two different kicks, front and back crawling, elementary backstroke, sidestroke, butterfly, flutter and dolphin kicking on back and ageappropriate water safety topics.

Pre-Fins Group
New this year, Dolphin Club will be offering two groups within Pre-Fins, helping ensure that each swimmer is in the practice environment that will help them have the greatest experience in a setting appropriate for their needs. We will be offering“ Beginner Novice” practices two days a week for 30 minutes each, while also providing a more challenging“ Novice” practice three days a week for 45 minutes.
Beginner Novice Swimmer must be at least 4 years or older and be able to complete a 25-yard freestyle and / or backstroke without assistance.

Novice No age requirement. Each swimmer must be able to swim a 25-yard length of the pool using legal freestyle, backstroke and either breaststroke or butterfly( at least 3 of the 4 strokes).
