Almodóvar continued his career, and in 1988 he directed his first film with a huge international success: "Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown" which is a light feminist comedy with fast-paced action. The film received mostly positive reviews from critics around the world. This film set the tone for his future films. In 1999 Almodóvar hit the jackpot with the film "All About My Mother" - a drama that tells the story of a mother that decides to search the father of her now dead son, and along the way she meets a few odd people. The film received the most awards and honors out of any other Spanish film.
Almodóvar likes to use strong female characters and transsexuals. He believes that women make better characters "women are more spectacular as dramatic subjects". His films also caused controversy on multiple occasions because of the darker themes or feminism.
His recent work is remarkable as well. The 2009's film "Broken Embraces" is a romantic thriller that follows the story of a former film director blinded in a car accident. The film's structure is like a puzzle, combining the present and the past, making it the more interesting.
To summarize, the history of Spanish films could be a film itself. It's the story of an industry that kept consistency with big names and titles and, most importantly, didn't die when bad times showed around, but instead bloomed into what we see today.
