National Parent Involvement Day Tom Heidemann, Anoka-Hennepin School Board Chair, recognized Nov. 15 National Parent Involvement Day by honoring district parents/guardians and families for their dedication and contributions toward helping Anoka- Hennepin students succeed. School Board Treasurer Bill Harvey earns all-hazards preparedness leadership certificate Superintendent Law presented Bill Harvey, School Board Treasurer, with a certificate in recognition of completing an all-hazards preparedness program for government leaders. The workshop guided leaders to an improved understanding of strategic and executive-level issues related to all-hazard disaster preparedness and in strategies to enhance coordination among officials responsible for emergency preparedness, response and recovery. School Board member Nicole Hayes completes key MSBA certifications Superintendent Law presented Nicole Hayes, School Board member, with a certificate in honor of completing Phase 1, 2, and 3 of Minnesota School Boards Association (MSBA) training. MSBA training programs ensure School Boards and their individual members have a strong foundation in all areas of school governance, finance, operations, and other aspects to ensure effective representation. Communications, delegations and petitions The School Board did not receive any communications, delegations or petitions. Community and Government Relations Legislative platform Al Ickler, executive director of community and government relations, presented items for the 2019 legislative platform. The platform includes a request to provide funding support for core educational programs including a three percent increase in the general education formula and addressing special education funding disparities. The platform advocates for resources to support school safety officers and staffing to support student mental health and chemical health issues. The platform includes a request to maximize funding available through school trust lands. The platform was approved on a unanimous vote. Elementary and Secondary Education Multilingual/bilingual Seal per Minnesota Statute 120B.022 Students who demonstrate required proficiency in a language other than English in Minnesota school districts may be awarded bilingual/multilingual seals and world language proficiency certificates on their transcripts upon a resolution from the School Board. The action would allow students who meet the criteria to earn college credit. If approved, the program would be available for the 2018-19 school year. The board will consider approval at a future meeting. World’s Best Workforce plan Dr. Johnna Rohmer-Hirt, director of research, evaluation and testing, provided an overview of the district’s efforts to meet the goals of Minnesota’s World’s Best Workforce plan. The plan measures performance in achieving school readiness, reading well by third grade, closing achievement gaps, career and college readiness, and improving student graduation rates. The presentation also included key data points from achievement and integration programming and how they support the overall achievement goals for all district students. Special education audit update Cory McIntyre, associate superintendent of middle schools and student services, provided an update on actions taken as a result of an audit of special education programming and services. McIntyre introduced a draft scorecard, which is a tool to monitor performance in selected areas. He explained staffing models in relation to workload issues and center-based programs and highlighted proposed changes for next school year. 2
