over $ 4.6 million as determined by an industry standard formula used to track volunteer time. The report tracks activity from the 10,490 volunteers, a group that includes over 2,000 student volunteers and nearly 1,000 citizen volunteers ages 55 and above.
Elementary and secondary education
Fit for the Future referendum update
Jim Skelly, director of communication and public relations, and Kay Villella, assistant director of communication and public relations, provided an overview of communication activities for the Fit for the Future referendum. Information was provided regarding voting information and upcoming community meetings regarding the referendum.
Referendum review and comment
Chuck Holden, chief operations officer, presented the review and comment document for public discussion and explained that a legal notice would be published in local legal newspapers as required by state law. Anoka-Hennepin received a positive review from the Minnesota Department of Education regarding the Fit for the Future facility plan, an action which allows the district to proceed with construction pending voter approval.
Anoka-Hennepin Technical High School update
Jeff McGonigal, associate superintendent for secondary schools, led an overview presentation regarding Anoka- Hennepin Technical High School( AHTHS).
He noted that the school has been in operation on the campus of Anoka Technical College and the location and partnership opportunities have been beneficial for students. Nancy Chave, principal, Sue Kvidera, assistant principal, and Patricia Halsey, teacher, assisted in the presentation.
Enrollment at AHTHS has surpassed projections and is nearly at 200 students currently. The school allows students to complete high school graduation requirements while earning college credit and align skills with in demand career programs. The presentation noted that the school is featured as a best practice program in the American School Boards Journal, a national publication sent to all School Board members in the United States.
Finance
Preliminary tax certification for taxes payable 2018
Michelle Vargas, chief financial officer, provided an overview of the preliminary tax levy for 2018, and a schedule of public meetings and notices that will lead to approval of a final levy by the School Board in December. Chair Tom Heidemann noted that the proposed levy increase is the maximum and could decrease before formal adoption. The School Board certified the request on a unanimous vote.
General counsel
Approval of master agreement for school readiness / kindergarten readiness teachers
Paul Cady, general counsel, presented a contract for the school readiness / kindergarten readiness staff, a firstever agreement with this staff grouping following 18 months of discussion. Cady explained that the agreement was within the financial parameters provided by the School Board and it was approved on a unanimous vote.
