Recognitions
During times of emergency, an effectively trained and prepared school staff, coupled with a coordinated ap-
proach with law enforcement, make a difference to ensure safety. A training video that supports Anoka-
Hennepin staff with proper direction to maximize safety has been recognized for excellence with a Hometown
Video Award at a national competition coordinated through the Alliance for Community Media.
The Anoka County Sheriff’s Office and Quad Cities Community Television (QCTV) partnered with the district to
complete the internal training program. The School Board recognized the team that coordinated production, in-
cluding, Chuck Holden, chief operations officer, Michelle Day-Millett, technical support technician, Anoka County
sheriff’s office deputies Jon Mathiesen and Cory Bowker, Karen George, executive director of QCTV, and Taylor
Johnson, producer at QCTV.
Also, QCTV was recognized for a third-place national finish in the National Association of Telecommunications
Officers and Advisors (NATOA) Government Programming Awards for their production of the Champlin Park High
School Football State quarterfinal game.
In addition, CTN Coon Rapids was recognized for three national awards that involved students from Anoka-
Hennepin schools. A Coon Rapids High School production of the 2017 Holiday Concert was also awarded with
the Hometown Video Award through the Alliance for Community Media. CTN also landed first place in NATOA’s
sports programming category for “Sportsnight,” a weekly program that highlights local sports and features
student athletes from Coon Rapids High School, and second place in the live sports event category for a boys
basketball playoff game featuring Anoka vs. Coon Rapids.

Community education and government relations
Resolution appointing/approving Anoka-Hennepin election judges
Al Ickler, director of community and governmental relations, and Heather Peters, communications coordinator,
presented a listing of 31 combined polling locations and election judges for the Nov. 7 special election. Anoka-
Hennepin will hold a referendum election district-wide for facilities and operating revenue and board member
elections in district three, four and six. The resolution was passed on a unanimous vote.
2016-17 Volunteer service hours report
Liz Burgard, parent involvement coordinator, presented a report on volunteer activity to support school opera-
tions and student achievement. Burgard reported that community members donated 192,676 volunteer work
hours in Anoka-Hennepin’s 35 volunteer programs where activity is tracked. The hours have a symbolic value of
