Debate coach Dan Boardwell introduced Connor Bullock, sophomore, who advanced to the National Debate
Tournament also to be held June 18 through 23 in Birmingham, Alabama.
Science teacher Gary Mansergh introduced Rachel Gasser, senior, who was selected as a Minnesota represen-
tative to the National Youth Science Camp. Only two graduating seniors in each state are invited to attend the
camp, which builds leadership skills in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) for emerging science
leaders nationwide.
Band director Doug Bakkum introduced Peter Hanson and Megan Brandner, juniors, who were honored to be
selected as members of the Minnesota Music Educators Association All-State Band.
Jackson Middle School
Tom Hagerty, principal, introduced teachers, advisors and students who demonstrated high performance levels
in music, math, and academic co-curricular competitions.
Choir teacher Kari Lace introduced eighth-grade students who were selected for the Minnesota All-State Honors
Choir. Honored students include Spencer Anderson, Jocelyn Cardoso-Johnston, Annika Erickson, Brooklyn Head,
Will Heinen, and Anna Keston.
Math teacher Belinda Eerdmans introduced nineteen students with top finishes at the St. Cloud State University
Math competition. Five students from grade seven finished in the top five percent of all students including Rob-
ert Weber, Claire Koch, Izzy John, Max O’Brien, and Sydney Hanson. Seventh grade students who finished in the
top ten percent include Colin Lange, Colin Stammer and Kate Wilhelmi. Six students from grade eight finished
in the top five percent of all students including Will Asinger, Kyle Horton, Gregory Nelson, Erin Smythe, Sheila
Legus-Christman and Kent Smith. Eighth grade students who finished in the top ten percent include Noah Lar-
son, Sydney Pollman, Darick Buhr, Megha Verghese, and Elizabeth Duerr.
Communications, delegations and petitions
No citizens requested time to provide communications, delegations and petitions.
Elementary and secondary education
Child nutrition price presentation
Chuck Holden, chief operations officer, introduced Noah Atlas, child nutrition director, who presented an update
on program participation and budget impacts which lead to a recommended a five cent price increase for lunch
meals beginning with the 2017-18 school year. Atlas noted that food and supply costs, nutrition requirements
and equipment replacement are all factor in making the recommendation. The School Board will consider ap-
proval of the recommendation at an upcoming meeting.
Education teach and train
Kim Pavlovich, director of secondary curriculum, instruction and assessment, led a team of family and con-
sumer science teachers including Lori Brumbaugh, Laurie Jensen, Karen Sherga and MaryBeth Allison. The
presentation provided an overview of curricular offerings and how a new articulated credit partnership program
with Anoka-Ramsey Community College for an “Education Teach and Train” class will provide college credit and
experience for students pursuing early childhood degrees and careers. One possible outcome of the class is to
prepare future staff members for Anoka-Hennepin Schools.
Elementary talent development
Dr. Mary Wolverton, associate superintendent for elementary schools, Ranae Case Evenson, director of elemen-
tary curriculum, instruction and assessment, Dr. Kari Rock, director of elementary schools and supplemental
programs, and Jennifer Clark, teaching and learning specialist, updated the School Board regarding elementary
level talent development programming. One key new addition for the 2017-18 school year is to provide the Cog-
nitive Abilities Test (CogAT) to all students in second grade and selected students in grade four. The CogAT is an
assessment that estimates learned reasoning and problem solving abilities through a series of verbal, quantita-
tive, and nonverbal items.
