The schools compete against 17,000 schools nationwide and were the only three recognized in the state of Minnesota. Jeff McGonigal, associate superinten- dent for secondary schools and Todd Protivinsky, principal on special assignment presented Vic Dreyer, PLTW director, who presented the honor. Jason Paske, Blaine High School principal, Dr. Annette Ziegler, Coon Rapids High School principal and Jes Lipa, STEP director accepted on behalf of their schools. Anoka County Public Health Recognition Award Cory McIntyre, executive director of Student Services, introduced the partners who work in partnership to sup- port mental health need of students in Anoka-Hennepin, an effort awarded by the the Anoka County Board of Commissioners. McIntyre noted the shared belief that awareness, integrated service delivery and access to ser- vices and therapists leads to better outcomes for students. Partners recognized include Lisa Woodruff and Sara Benson from People, Inc., Christie Haustein and Michael Landren from Headway Emotional Health Services and Nita Kumar, Anoka-Hennepin mental health consultant. Top 10 state geography bee finish for Andover Elementary student Mark VanVoorhis, principal at Andover Elementary School presented Evan Kouba, grade five student, who placed ninth overall in the State Geography Bee held at Minnesota State University, Mankato. The competition included 100 top students in grades four through eight from across Minnesota. Athena Awards The Athena Award is presented to the top female athlete at high schools from Anoka-Hennepin and throughout the metro area. Honored students include Erin Becker, Andover High School, Taylor Krone, Anoka High School, Gabriella Rosenthal, Blaine High School, Lizzie Zeller, Champlin Park High School, and Caitlin Ackerman, Coon Rapids High School. Athletes will accept their awards at a May 4 banquet and ceremony held in Bloomington. MSHSL AAA Award nominees Each high school nominates one male and one female student for the Minnesota State High School League Triple A award, recognizing excellence in athletics, academics and the arts. Anoka-Hennepin students nominated include Alyson Cole and William Kron, Andover High School, Emily Smith and Jack Weaver, Anoka High School, Madison Pender and Byron Bynum, Blaine High School, Megan Muuneke and Max Shellum, Champlin Park High School, and Clara Henneman and Tanner Isaacs, Coon Rapids High School.
