Recognitions
Anoka Halloween button sales
Representatives from the Anoka Halloween organization presented a check for $900 in
appreciation and in support of Wilson, Lincoln and Franklin elementary schools for their
participation in the button sales program. Liz McFarland, board member and Mary Litke,
treasurer, made the presentation and donation on behalf of the organization.

Champlin Park High School
Champlin Park High School was recognized for winning the state championship in Minnesota High School Music Listening Contest, held Feb. 5, at Augsburg College. Program
advisor Sieglinde Grivna provided an overview of the competitions with additional support from Principal Mike George.

Jerri McGonigal, principal for Anoka Middle School for the Arts (AMSA), highlighted a
series of recent achievements. McGonigal also noted that AMSA was named a National
Magnet School of Distinction, one of three middle schools to be named to the honor in Minnesota.
AMSA art teacher Matt Malette presented eighth-grade students Miranda Lathrop and
Laima Liulevicius who were awarded the state level Scholastic Gold Key for art. Liulevicius
also earned for the National Silver Key Award and qualified for the Minnesota State Geography Bee. Zachary Glaser and Sydney McClure were recognized for their state Scholastic
Silver Key awards.
AMSA science teacher Becky Marshall presented student leaders Alec Kranig and Elizabeth
Arseneau, who are part of a student-led effort in the Samsung Solve for Tomorrow contest.
AMSA is one of 15 schools in the nation selected as a finalist in the competition.
AMSA teacher and curriculum integrator Jolanda Dranchak, presented The Storm, a student-produced literary journal that received a rank of superior in the National Council of
Teachers of English (NCTE) program recognizing excellence in student literary magazines.
The competition is open to all secondary schools within the United States, Canada, Virgin
Islands and American schools abroad. The journals are ranked by quality of writing, variety
of genres, interdisciplinary and interdepartmental involvement in writing from various
subjects, design, quality of graphics, and student involvement in the editorial process.

A future without limit
Gwen Poore, activities director at Anoka High School (AHS), presented athletes and
coaches for School Board recognition. Amy Hedberg, gymnastics coach, introduced sophomore Hannah Tuomela who finished in third place in the uneven parallel bars at the state
gymnastics meet.
AHS wrestlers were recognized for their third-place team finish at the state tournament,
and three individual wrestlers received recognition for their top finishes. Team members
include seniors Josh Schrodek, Hunter DeLeon, Jeremy Rodman, Jesse Heifort and Visente
Cruz. Underclassmen include juniors Calvin Germinaro-Nahring, Cole Eischens, Billy
Haden, Dalton Miller, Ben Lathrop and Jason Rollins; sophomores Tyler Eischens, Caleb
Jungling, Richard Hamonds, Jackson Street, and Evan DeChene; freshmen Scott Springer,
Colby Njos, and Tyler Young, and AMSA eighth-grader Riley Emery. Tyler Eischens
