Wrapping Up the Wardrobe Worries

by Anna East magazine

Recently, while in LA, I had some new headshots taken. As I thought about what to bring for wardrobe options, I realized that a lot of what I had brought to wear on my trip just simply wouldn ' t be ideal for a headshot. Either it wasn ' t form fitting enough, had weird straps, or just wasn ' t complimentary to my features and wouldn ' t make my headshot stand out in a thumbnail size.
We all know these situations- You ' re asked to bring your own wardrobe options to a shoot, you have to self tape an audition but your wall is blue and all of your shirts are, too. Or you ' re getting headshots but are overwhelmed with what is appropriate and best to bring. You feel that you ' re mentally prepared, but your clothing may not reflect that. Whether we like it or not, our visual presentation of ourselves in our field is so important. In order for our best selves to be seen, heard, and understood, we must dress the part.
of light) and bright hues of red and yellow.
Okay, okay, it ' s a lot of information, I know! But I do have a secret for making it all easier. If you live in LA, then you have an upperhand for making your wardrobe life less worrisome. At " It ' s A Wrap! Production Wardrobe Sales " clothing stores in both Burbank and Hollywood, you can sift through clothing that is already set approved, because it ' s coming straight from the studios ' wardrobe department! Once I found this place, I became a regular, visiting every so often for audition shirts and the like. It ' s heavily discounted, and usually has sales going on as well. Great for the artist ' s budget. DISCLAIMER: I am not trying to sell this place to you, but rather revealing a gold mine of great clothing for actors. If you happen to know of any place similar, please do spread the word, and let me know, too! I ' d love to know about more places in other locations around the U. S. and / or the world.
" That shirt is too red," the cameraman says. " That shirt is too strappy," the photographer says. " That shirt is too bright," your agent says. Oy, vey! Then what is left to be worn?
If you feel lost, not to worry! With just a little education on what is acceptable and safe on screen, you will be on your way to having the presence of a true professional! With the knowledge of color theory, I have come learn that for the most part, I have a " color palette " that complements my features. With my red hair and fair skin, I tend to stick to jewel tones, and have recently branched out to rosier colors and lighter blues and greens. I know that for headshots, it ' s a good idea to have most of your shoulders covered, if not your arms, too.( Unless you are trying to show off your gun show for athletic shots.) We never want to wear anything too distracting, because our product is not what we are wearing, but who we are! The camera picks up color differently, too, so stay away from intricate patterns( unless layered), bright white( for the reflection of light), all black( it absorbs a lot
Oh- and to finish up my headshot story from above... I went to It ' s A Wrap, found a loot, and ended up with some really great headshots. One of my favorites is incuded with this article. I love the look and with the 30 % off women ' s going on right now, the look was only $ 16. I ' m sure some of my energy for the shoot came from the fact that I knew my top combination would complement my eye color and popped me out of the background. And that same look will be useful in an audition, on set, AND even in my daily life.

Who woulda ' thunk it? See you on set!
