New Risk-Based Approaches and Tools for Source
Water Assessment and Protection
1:30–4:30 p.m.
Room: Mile High Ballroom 4A
Track: Water Resources & Conservation Management
Moderator: Christine Owen
Source water protection is aimed at mitigating impacts from
contamination of source water such that the costly removal
of contaminants can be avoided. “An ounce of prevention is
worth a pound of cure” readily describes the value of preventing
contamination from a drinking water supply; however, the vast
number of potential issues in a watershed as well as the size
of a watershed can make this a daunting endeavor. To protect
source water, utilities need tools to develop rational, manageable
assessment approaches for source waters.

Improved Planning for a Future with Great Uncertainty
1:30–4:30 p.m.
Room: Mile High Ballroom 4B
Track: Water Resources & Conservation Management
Moderator: Esteban Azagra
All utilities face uncertainty in their operations this year and in
the future. This session introduces attendees to new methods to
plan and prepare for the inherent uncertainty in their operations.
These methods include, flexible treatment system planning,
regional economic impact analysis, and decision making for
deep uncertainty (e.g. climate change). Presentations will include
case studies.
