HORWOOD HALL OVERVIEW Additional accommodation due to reduction in room adjacent to the Plantation Park staff housing Music Facility now proposed in a standalone building A B B B B B C B D B E horwood hub Operational Space 2 1 View approaching Horwood hub from the south showing the lower level social space and roof terrace above. Each hub will be different - the buildings will be accents within each hall. The design of the hubs will allow for future flexibility. Each hub is positioned to maximise opportunities for interaction and linkages to the unique landscaped setting. Social and study space is to be provided based on a general area allocation of 0.5 sq m per student. The functions that are to be accommodated within the social spaces will be developed with Keele University and the Student Union. Horwood is the largest hub as it contains the central operations for all of the halls, as well as social and study space for the hall. A two storey new social hub building will be positioned centrally for the Horwood community with a new shared space and link to the heart of the University campus. Hub Upper Floor Plan The site-wide operational space is located on the lower level, with direct connection to the screened service yard. The social areas, positioned on both the upper and lower ground, provide a variety of spaces that open out onto south facing external areas. Operational Space Three different types of spaces could be created: 1. A linear space facing on to the roof terrace providing opportunities for a series of lounge spaces, enjoying views to the south 3 2. A quieter space off the main double height circulation space, providing opportunities for study away from the activity of the rest of the hub 3. The main flexible space, with opportunities to spill out onto the south facing terrace; most likely to contain the food offer, alongside other social spaces Hub Lower Floor Plan Project Update – August 2016
