Each hub will be different - the buildings will be accents
within each hall.
The design of the hubs will allow for future flexibility. Each
hub is positioned to maximise opportunities for interaction
and linkages to the unique landscaped setting.
Social and study space is to be provided based on a general
area allocation of 0.5 sq m per student. The functions that
are to be accommodated within the social spaces will be
developed with Keele University and the Student Union.
Hub Plan
At Barnes Hall, a single hub is proposed. This is on a
single level. The simplicity of the proposal gives great
opportunity for flexibility – a blank canvas for a series of
social and study spaces.
The images show a covered space wrapping around the
building, extending the functions into the landscape.
The proposals could consider the following:
1. The reception area intended to be located at the
intersection of the primary routes within the site.
2. A quieter space, with the opportunity for natural light to
be brought into the spaces through high level glazing
3. An active space facing to the south
