From In order to build design scenarios which will lead to either incremental or radical
service innovation, I use polarities to orchestrate possibilities.

The first step is to identify opposing values from the previous envisioned implications.

Recapping that we previously brainstormed and analyzed the trends which are relevant
to our project context. I extracted representing values of each cases and lay them out:
affordable
expensive
affordable
luxury
Interesting thing of playing with polarities is 2 polarity sets can generate 1 dimensions
with 4 possible design scenarios while 3 polarity sets can create 3 dimensions with 12
design scenarios. I went thru the following process to closely examine each dimensions
While drafting polarities, do find the “positive” value instead of only identifying adversative vocabulary. For example, when I came up with the concept of “expensive”, I transformed it to “luxury” to make a statement that it’s a value to appreciate great comfort
to identify what might be of greater value to the project context we are working on:
• pose as much opposing polarities as possible: you will never know which might
sparkle breakthrough at the end
and extravagant living style. On the other hand, “cheap” is not appropriate to explain the
value opposite to “luxury” therefore I altered it to be “affordable” to represent the value
• look at the dimension and ask questions: does any quadrant inspire you to imagine
behind being able do something without incurring financial difficulties or without risk of
a new story? new meaning of consumption? who is in the story? what this person
undesirable consequences. After I quickly jotted down all ideas, I examined each polarity
looks like? what happens in the story? what this person might get at the end of the
based on this principle to make sure they represent value which might lead to the gen-
story?
eration of possible scenarios.
The next step to construct dimensions using opposing polarities set by placing them like
this:

• try to pose another polarity across and see what changes (repeat the
questions again over the new dimension)
