Bienvenue! huan yíng, Bienvenido!
Our goal is to give students the right linguistic skills for the 21st century, while promoting cultural understanding, so they can appreciate the target language and culture for the rest of their lives. Through engaging and interactive programmes in French, Mandarin, and Spanish, students learn the most important skills for language acquisition: listening, speaking, reading, writing and cultural literacy. Assessments across all language courses from 8 to 12 follow the same standards that outline the skills that students learn and apply in foreign language courses. Grade 12( 11 accelerated) and AP courses follow the College Board AP standards.
Students are placed according to their demonstrated proficiency. Final placement decisions are based on assessment results, teacher input, and the student’ s learning profile. In exceptional cases, placements may be adjusted during the first few weeks of school with a recommendation from the teacher and Department Head. Our Senior School language programming will empower students to select and follow a language pathway in their Grade 8 year. Students also have the opportunity to participate in the dual language pathway upon approval. Our programming will support our students in fostering deeper language acquisition skills, higher linguistic proficiency, and meaningful cultural understanding. To this end, students are required to commit to their language pathway by Grade 9.
