AP Spanish Language and Culture is a rigorous course for Spanish students ready to work with more advanced language skills and cultural topics. Students build stronger interpretive, interpersonal, and presentational skills using authentic materials such as articles, stories, interviews, podcasts, and infographics from the Spanish-speaking world. The course follows the six AP themes: Global Challenges, Science and Technology, Contemporary Life, Personal and Public Identities, Families and Communities, and Beauty and Aesthetics. Students will be assessed on their ability to interpret more complex Spanish, communicate with clarity and greater independence, and analyze cultural perspectives at the advanced-low level.
LANGUAGES: FAQ
How will my daughter be placed in Languages?
It is important that a student be placed in a level in which she will have the greatest chance of being successful both in terms of her linguistic growth and confidence. Students who wish to be considered for the Accelerated class must sit a placement test( challenge) in May / June at a time scheduled by the School. Students entering Grades 9 to 12 will be assessed prior to placement depending on the language choice( s) they have made.
Can my daughter take a second foreign language course?
Yes. Students can enter a dual language pathway in Grade 8 or 9 if they would like to take a second foreign language. Please note, entry into this pathway must be approved by the Director of Teaching and Learning. Please consult Post Secondary Counsellors for specific post secondary recommendations and requirements around language.
Does the school recommend Summer Programs / Trips in second languages?
The department receives numerous brochures outlining summer programs in French, Mandarin and Spanish and will provide information upon request. All enrichment programs( credit and non-credit options) are listed under“ Enrichment Programs” in Naviance, our post-secondary planning portal for Grades 10 to 12 families.
At what point can my daughter move to a different level?
The placement of students is reviewed toward the end of the school year. Movements between levels are recommended by the current year’ s teacher and the Department Head. Acceleration is possible through the“ Challenge” process within a language. The decision to accelerate may also involve discussion with students and their parents / guardians.
