MANDARIN PROGRAM INTRODUCTION
All Mandarin courses fulfill the core competencies required by the Ministry of Education, with enriched learning occurring at all levels. Students communicate actively in Mandarin— both orally and in written form— through authentic, meaningful tasks. Instruction is grounded in the framework of Content( Know), Curricular Competencies( Do), and Big Ideas( Understand), with Chinese culture integrated throughout the learning experience. Students engage with a range of resources, including authentic music, films, videos, interactive online materials, and the digital language laboratory. Cultural learning opportunities include field trips, songs and dances, Chinese calligraphy, paper-cutting, and occasions for students to share their insights and knowledge about the various cultural holidays and traditions. Across all courses, students are encouraged to reflect on their own identities and to develop an appreciation for cultures beyond their own. All courses are student-centred, personalized, and collaborative.
• Mandarin( Grades 8-12): a dynamic program for students with limited or no previous experience with the language.
• Mandarin accelerated( Grades 8-12): an intensive program for students with a strong Mandarin linguistic proficiency. These students move through the curriculum at a fast pace and will normally complete the Grade 12 program in their Grade 11 year and may consider the Advanced Placement( AP) course in their Grade 12 year.
Decisions about a change in placement are considered in exceptional circumstances early in the school year with the permission of the Department Head and teacher recommendations.
It is important to note that the Mandarin program is designed for students who are still acquiring the language and is not intended for heritage learners.
