Art 8 teaches the essential elements of visual art ; responding to the work of other artists , cultures and craft makers , learning about image development strategies , and developing skills with a variety of media , techniques and processes . Students begin by exploring the question “ What is art ?” They are encouraged to think critically , and to make art that is both creative and meaningful . The course incorporates 2D , 3D , and mixed media work . Through these projects they explore the following Big Ideas : Creative growth requires patience and risktaking ; visual art is a language for individual expression and communication ; artists often challenge the status quo and offer new perspectives . Where possible , a unit of study is built upon visiting a local gallery exhibition and / or a cross-curricular connection . Assessment is standards based , with ongoing formative and summative assessment of course work and project-based assignments .
Art 9 builds on the skills and techniques learned in Art 8 . Throughout the course , students learn how to use art materials effectively to create artworks that reflect the world around them . They learn how to explore a concept or theme and how to choose materials and processes that best suit the visual communication of their ideas . Through this , students explore the following Big Ideas : Identity is explored and expressed through the visual arts ; they provide opportunities to gain insight into perspectives of people from a variety of times , places , and cultures ; art experiences can build community ; they use a unique sensory language for creating and communicating . Where possible a gallery visit or a guest artist will be organized in order to enhance the learning experience . Assessment is standards based , with ongoing formative and summative assessment of course work and project-based assignments .
