Teen dating violence and abuse is a major public health problem in this country. In addition to undermining young people’ s individual growth and academic potential, dating violence and abuse puts young people at risk for long-term health consequences, serious injury and even death. Prevention needs to be a public health priority. According the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, nearly 1 in 10 high school students report experiencing physical dating violence.
Start Strong: Building Healthy Teen Relationships( Start Strong) was a national program of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation( RWJF) in collaboration with Blue Shield of California Foundation( BSCF) and Futures Without Violence. From 2008 to 2012, RWJF and BSCF invested $ 18 million in 11 Start Strong sites across the country to promote healthy relationships among 11- to 14-year-olds and identify promising strategies to prevent teen dating violence( TDV). It was one of the largest initiatives ever funded targeting middle school students to promote healthy relationships and prevent dating violence.
Prevention in Middle School Matters
A study of 1,430 7th grade students reveals that many 7th-graders are dating and experiencing physical, psychological and electronic dating violence. RTI International( RTI) conducted the study and this report covers the first wave or baseline data collected in fall 2010 from students in Start Strong schools and comparison schools. This survey is part of a larger evaluation to assess the overall impact of the program Start Strong: Building Healthy Teen Relationships.

Middle Schoolers Are Dating:

For teen dating violence prevention to be effective, it must begin before kids start dating. Research shows that many young teens begin dating in some form as early as middle school.
Research Says
The findings of a recent study reveal that many 7th-graders are dating, and that many also are witnessing or experiencing dating violence.
According to the study:
• Three in 4 seventh graders surveyed said that they had a boyfriend or girlfriend.
• More than 1 in 3 reported being a victim of psychological dating violence in the last 6 months. Nearly 1 in 6 reported being a victim of physical dating violence in the last 6 months.
• Nearly 1 in 3 reported being a victim of electronic dating aggression in the last 6 months.
• One in 3 students surveyed reported having witnessed boys or girls being physically violent to persons they were dating.
