Enjoy the Tshwane Talent on Show
When you take to the streets of Tshwane for the first edition of the Absa RUN YOUR CITY TSHWANE 10K , you will not only run through various sponsor activations and vibe zones , with music , dancers , cheerleaders , vibe commentators and the like , but you ’ ll also pass a number of local performing arts groups , who will be dancing and drumming up a storm to entertain and motivate you .
The local artists are all part of the Paepae Creative Arts Organisation ( PCAO ), a registered non-profit organisation that works with young people to develop traditional African skills in dance , music and theatre . The company originated in Mamelodi , one of the large townships on the outskirts of Tswane , and its mission is to provide young people from a number of townships in the area with cultural awareness and life skills . They conduct workshops and development programmes , using traditional African performance skills to explore contemporary issues in township life .
As part of this , PCAO is sending various performing groups to be stationed at various points long the race route this Sunday , including Zulu dancers , Pantsula dancers , Setswana dancers and Sepedi dancers , as well as a drumming group . The athletes are encouraged to take a break from the race when they reach the groups , and join in with the dancers , or just enjoy the show while they catch their breath for a minute or two .
PACO ’ s success has seen touring groups travel to perform and conduct workshops in places as far-flung as China , Japan , the USA and Qatar , while similar groups from other countries have travelled to South Africa to collaborate with PACO , including groups from the UK , USA and Japan .
