In the field of well-being and digestive health, prebiotics and probiotics are related concepts, with different functions and characteristics.
Probiotics: are live microorganisms, bacteria, and yeasts, which when consumed have beneficial effects on health and the digestive system, they help maintain a balance of the intestinal microbiota, fighting harmful bacteria and supporting the functions of the immune system, such as Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium. We find them in yogurt, kefir, sauerkraut, kimchi, and some types of cheese.
Prebiotics: are a type of non-digestible dietary fiber that serves as food for probiotics and beneficial bacteria in the intestine, they help the growth and activity of healthy bacteria in the colon, improving intestinal health, they contain inulin and oligosaccharides, they are in asparagus, garlic, onions, bananas, oats and chicory.
Kefir is a fermented food that is considered a probiotic, as it contains live microorganisms, providing: benefits for health, the digestive system, fights infections and diseases, is antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, contains calcium and vitamin K2, and is an antioxidant.
