The phrase is “carpe diem,” taken from Roman poet Horace's Odes, written over 2,000 years ago. As everyone and their grandmother knows by now, “carpe diem” means “seize the day.” But what does it mean to seize the day?

To seize the day means living in the Present, enjoying the Present, and forging our dreams and aspirations in the Present. The past is gone, and we can only learn from it, and the future…, well the future is out there uncertain.

We only have the Present moment to be all we can be (no pun intended). Hence Carpe Diem.
