The Argentine Republic commemorated on February 22 the 119 years of uninterrupted presence in Antarctica, a sector of which it
was the only permanent occupant
for four decades.
The first step took place in 1904, when the Argentine Antarctic Metrological Observatory was installed in the South Orcadas. There the first permanent Antarctic base
in the world was established. At present, the nation has 13 bases.
Six are permanent and tasks are carried out throughout the year,
and the rest are temporary.
“Antarctica, above all things, is a
field of scientific and technological research. The world considers it a space for preservation and future.
We have an enormous responsibility linked to providing knowledge that improves development possibilities. The future of humanity will depend
on the reserves that places like
Antarctica have. And if we don't preserve it based on more knowledge, we will be in difficulties”, said the Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation Daniel Filmus.
A sample of Latin American brotherhood is the joint proposal of Argentina and Chile for the establishment of the Marine Protected Area in the Western Antarctic Peninsula.
The objective is to preserve the marine ecosystem and its diversity in the face of the threat of global warming and human actions such as fishing predation and contamination by microplastics.
